LAND ROVER LR3 WINS PRESTIGIOUS 2005 MOTOR TREND SUV OF THE
YEAR
IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 2004 – Today, the all-new LR3 was named
Motor Trend’s 2005 Sport/Utility of the Year. Motor
Trend
editor-in-chief, Angus MacKenzie, presented this prestigious
award to Mike O'Driscoll, president, Aston Martin Jaguar
Land Rover, at the California International Auto Show in
Anaheim, California.
Criteria for the award included a series of comprehensive
evaluations and grueling tests—including street, track, and
off-road—administered to each of the seven entrants. In
addition to LR3, contenders included Chevrolet Equinox, Ford
Escape Hybrid, Ford Freestyle, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Infiniti
QX56 and Nissan Pathfinder.
"LR3 significantly changes the rules for today’s SUV and
Motor Trend is at the leading edge of acknowledging its
importance," said O'Driscoll. "LR3 is at the heart of Land
Rover’s transformation into the 21st
century and this award confirms that we achieved the goals we
set for it."
Designed and engineered for success, LR3 is new in every
way. "This vehicle delivers a premium package that is
optimized for North American consumers," added O'Driscoll.
Developed by and for Land Rover, its modern architecture
delivers all the comfort, refinement and on-road attributes
of a monocoque, while continuing to set new standards in
off-road performance.
A specially developed 300hp 4.4-liter version of Jaguar’s
acclaimed V8 engine, coupled with a six-speed automatic
‘intelligent shift’ transmission and permanent four-wheel
drive, deliver an SUV with outstanding performance.
On-road driving and refinement are further enhanced by a

2005 Land Rover Freelander
The Land Rover Freelander builds on its rugged good looks
and award-winning performance in 2005 with enhanced value.
Buyers will have a choice of either the 5-door SE or the
sporty looking 3-door SE3 with lift-off hardback. A new
premium package of options brings the SE up to the same
specifications but at less cost than last year's HSE model,
which has been discontinued.
"Freelander's two model line-up allows us to concentrate on
the SE, which is where we have the strongest demand," said
Richard Beattie, executive vice president, Land Rover North
America. "We have increased standard content and lowered the
price of the best equipped model to build value."
New base MSRP for the SE will be $27,495, an increase of
$1500 over the same model in 2004, but now includes sunroof,
fog lights and full size spare tire as standard. Those items
were optional at $1,475 last year.
The SE3 also has an MSRP of $27,495, a $500 increase over
2004. Buyers have a choice of which model Freelander best
suits their taste and lifestyle with no difference in price.
The Premium Package includes leather interior,
harman/kardon® six-disc CD sound system, 18-inch wheels,
cargo area cover and illuminated vanity mirror for an MSRP
of $3,000.
Freelander was the first Land Rover vehicle to use very
rigid, monocoque construction and independent suspension
when it was introduced in 1997. Now all three Land Rover
models sold in North America - Freelander, the new LR3 and
the highly regarded Range Rover - all share this
construction.
Since its launch here in 2001, Freelander has carved out an
exclusive niche in the market by offering a blend of on- and
off-road capability, rugged good looks and an attractive
price for a Land Rover branded vehicle.
Both the SE and the SE3 have seating for five with the front
bucket seats carefully sculpted for comfort and support. The
front seats can have optional electric heating.
Freelander's load space is a very flexible environment. A
60/40-split rear seat is the secret -- it folds via a clever
"jack-knife" mechanism that leaves an uncluttered load area
when fully folded forward giving 46.6 cu. ft. (1.32 m3) of
useable space in the SE and 42.2 cu. ft. (1.19 m3) in the
SE3.
The standard air conditioning system incorporates a pollen
filter, a benefit for those occupants who suffer from
allergy or respiratory conditions and OptiKool rear glass
for solar heat management.
The 174 horsepower, 2.5-liter, light-alloy V6 engine drives
a five-speed automatic transmission with CommandShift™. EPA
estimated City/Highway fuel economy figures are 17/21 mpg,
respectively.
Freelander's all-wheel drive system with Electronic Traction
Control is recognized as being best in this segment.
Additional technological features include Hill Descent
Control, Electronic Traction Control, ABS and Electronic
Brakeforce Distribution.
A four-wheel independent McPherson strut suspension with
coil springs provides 7.1 inches of vertical wheel travel in
front and 9.4 inches in the rear along with a comfortable
ride and European-style handling. Steering is power-assisted
rack-and-pinion with the steering rack mounted on the
firewall, up and away from road hazards.
On the inside, Freelander retains the comprehensive interior
upgrades introduced in 2004 to improve comfort and the
feeling of luxury. There is a new fascia, instruments,
switchgear, door trim panels and front seats that offer
better body and under-thigh comfort.
All Land Rovers are backed by a 4-year/50,000-mile
new-vehicle limited warranty, a 6-year/unlimited-mileage
corrosion perforation limited warranty and Land Rover Road
RecoverySM 24-hour service.
Land Rover vehicles are available from 164 Land Rover
retailers in the U.S., including 96 exclusive Land Rover
Centres, which look more like hunting lodges or ski villas
than traditional dealerships.

THE BEST GETS EVEN BETTER WITH NEW NAVIGATION, ENTERTAINMENT
AND COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
Range Rover takes a technological leap forward in 2005 with
a number of convenience and entertainment improvements.
Since its introduction three years ago, the Range Rover HSE
has gone from strength to strength. No other luxury SUV has
matched its overall appeal. Its steady sales growth,
especially to very high profile celebrity owners, attests to
its performance, presence and panache.
HIGHLIGHTS for 2005
The majority of the new technology involves electronics
contained within the vehicle itself. In order for these
innovations to perform at their optimum level, the copper
wiring network 'under the skin' that supports the
information and entertainment features has now been replaced
with a new fiber-optic harness.
The new M.O.S.T system (Media Orientated Systems Transport)
is a multimedia fiber-optic network optimized for automotive
applications. It connects a variety of systems that need to
communicate - the GPS navigation has to work with the
security system, the car telephone has to work with the
entertainment system so it will mute when a call is
received, voice activation and hands-free speakerphones
require a microphone, and a display is needed for navigation
and DVD playback to name just a few.
The 2005 Range Rover now has a low-temperature polysilicon
VGA (video graphics display) screen which has 3.5 times
higher resolution than the LCD screen it replaced. It is
touch sensitive, giving it the ability to control multiple
in-car systems through a combination of hard and soft
buttons.
In addition to the usual trip computer functions such as
fuel consumption, tank range, average speed and the like,
the new Range Rover has a 4x4 Driver interface that
graphically displays vehicle settings and positions, such as
the angle of the front wheels, the suspension setting and
direction of travel. Knowing front wheel position is
especially useful when slogging through deep mud ruts.
The GPS premium navigation system is now voice-activated and
DVD-based. One DVD contains mapping for the entire
continental United States. It uses not only GPS signals, but
dead-reckoning and map-matching techniques to guide you when
the vehicle loses sight of the GPS satellites as happens
when in a tunnel. The off-road mode guides you to your
destination by degrees and keeps track of where you've been
by setting trace points which can be followed when returning
to your start point.
The harman/kardon® LOGIC7™ surround sound system truly has
to be experienced to understand its premium quality. It
delivers audiophile sound through 14 speakers using 710
watts of digital amplification. There is a six-disc CD
changer in the glovebox which can play MP3 formatted discs
as well as regular CDs, allowing greater choice of
selection. The system can be controlled three ways: by voice
command, steering wheel controls or the touch screen.
The personal telephone integration system allows owners to
use their own mobile phone in the car either via an
integrated cradle or with the wireless convenience of
Bluetooth™ technology.
STANDARD
RANGE ROVER FEATURES FOR 2005
The Range Rover has achieved near legendary status thanks to
a total design and engineering philosophy that has not been
matched. Its monocoque body with integrated chassis is among
the world's stiffest and provides the stable platform for
its all-independent suspension with interconnected, height
adjustable air springs. The ride is smooth and supple
whether traversing a rocky slope or the interstate.
The chassis also features a number of electronic traction
control systems including Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)
and the Land Rover-pioneered Hill Descent Control (HDC).
Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) and Electronic Brakeforce
Distribution (EBD) supplement the standard four-wheel disc
anti-lock brakes (ABS).
The fly-by-wire throttle has two modes of operation: one for
on-road the other for off-road where its reaction is reduced
to assure smooth progress over uneven surfaces. The
all-aluminum, 4.4-liter V8 engine is a 32-valve, DOHC
producing 282 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and generates 325
lb/ft of torque at 3,600 rpm. It can tow up to 7,700 lbs.,
negotiate the toughest off-road trails or cruise at speeds
up to 122 MPH. EPA mileage is 12 city, 16 highway.
Three options continue to be available for HSE. The Heated
Accessories Package includes electrically heated front and
rear seats, an integrated ski bag, as well as a heated
steering wheel. The Luxury Interior Package includes the
Heated Accessories Package and adds contour seats with
16-way driver and passenger seat adjustment, upgraded
leather on the upper dashboard door-pulls and cubby box lid.
Optional 20" alloy wheels with a full-size spare are also
available. Buyers can select from two wood finishes and six
leather colors. American cherry or burled walnut wood can be
paired with a multiple of leather choices including:
Parchment, Navy, Ivory, Aspen, Sand and Charcoal.
For 2005, Tonga Green replaces Epsom Green and the remaining colors carry
over- maintaining total exterior choices at nine. The
standard colors are Java Black, Giverny Green, Zambezi
Silver, Chawton White, Adriatic Blue, Tonga Green, Alveston
Red, Maya Gold and Bonnati Grey.
LAND ROVER ADDS THE POWERFUL, ALL-NEW LR3 TO ITS 2005 MODEL
YEAR LINE-UP
The introduction of an all-new model from Land Rover is big
news, since it has only happened nine times in the company’s
56-year history. The launch of the new LR3 is that much more
significant, as it’s the first new vehicle developed
entirely under Ford Motor Company ownership.
Carefully developed and engineered to Land Rover's exacting
standards, the LR3 is packed with power, technology and a
spacious interior cabin virtually unmatched in its class.
Available in SE and HSE derivatives, LR3 offers the
advantages of a powerful and responsive 300 hp 4.4-liter V8
engine, mated to a
six-speed electronic automatic transmission. This transmission
is intelligent—adapting its shift patterns to driving style
and road conditions—and equipped with Command Shift™,
allowing the driver full control over gear changes.
"A true Land Rover, the LR3 benefits from a clarity of
purpose and conviction that is evident from its clean
design, versatility and outstanding driving experience. Like
all new Land Rovers, its on-road composure is on a level
with its outstanding off-road capability," said Richard
Beattie, executive vice president, Land Rover North America.

The LR3 introduces sophisticated new technologies that are a
first in the industry. Among them is Land Rover’s patented
Terrain Response™ system that optimizes drivability and
control, as well as maximizing traction over a variety of
surfaces. The driver simply chooses one of five terrain
settings via a rotary knob on the center console:
mud/ruts
sand
rock crawl
Terrain Response then automatically selects the most
appropriate setting for the vehicle’s advanced electronic
controls and traction aids – including ride height, engine
torque response, hill descent control, electronic traction
control and transmission settings.
Highly responsive on-road performance was a top priority for
the LR3. The new powertrain uses a specially developed
4.4-liter version of Jaguar’s acclaimed AJV8, DOHC engine
that develops 300 bhp @ 5,500 rpm. Changes for Land Rover
use include increased displacement (up from 4.2 liters),
more low-end torque - 315 lb. -ft. @ 4,000 rpm, enhanced
dust- and water-proofing, and revised breathing to enable
the vehicle to wade in up to 24 inches of water.
For Land Rover use, the water and oil pumps have been
re-engineered as has the oil sump to cope with wide ambient
temperature ranges, operating environments and angles of
operation.
The engine is mated to an intelligent, six-speed, ZF
automatic transmission with CommandShift™ and a two-speed
transfer case with electronically lockable center
differential. As with all Land Rover vehicles, the LR3 has
permanent four-wheel drive with power being normally split
50/50 between the front and rear axles.
A new approach to body structure achieves the benefits of a
stiff monocoque combined with the strength and off-road
articulation made possible by a traditional separate chassis
frame.
This Integrated Body-frame™ structure allows Land Rover to
deliver all the comfort, refinement and on-road attributes
of a monocoque, while continuing to set new standards in
off-road performance. The combination of a tough frame mated
to a rigid body structure provides occupants with a secure
zone in the event of a collision, while also acting as a
stable foundation for a suite of advanced dynamic control
systems which give the vehicle its sure-footed confidence.
The design of the chassis was evolved with safety in mind.
Advanced computer design techniques enabled Land Rover
engineers to simulate a variety of scenarios and to evaluate
the collision performance of the design before any metal was
cut. The body structure uses high strength steel in vital
areas such as the A-pillar and roof cross members to provide
occupants with a safety-cage.
The complex design of the chassis frame, with its
hydroformed construction, reflects this work in its
contribution to the safety and crash performance
characteristics of the new LR3. The front structure of the
frame is designed to provide the collision load path with
buckle points to control its collapse in the event of an
impact. The load path is deliberately designed to take into
account differential crash performance. The front structure
is placed so as to impact another vehicle down low at its
strongest point to minimize the effect of the collision.
LR3 has extremely powerful four-wheel disc brakes and ABS,
Electronic Brakeforce Distribution EBD and Emergency Brake
Assist (EBA) to provide an automatic extra boost when a
panic stop is detected.
Emergency maneuvers and cornering control on slippery
surfaces is made safer thanks to Dynamic Stability Control.
The parking brake is set electronically using a lift tab on
the center console. It operates a drum cast into the rear
wheel disc rotors.
If a crash cannot be avoided, LR3 is equipped with eight
airbags on seven-seat vehicles and six on five-seat models.
The driver and passenger airbags deploy in two stages
depending on the severity of the frontal impact and work in
harmony with the seat belts.
North American vehicles are fitted with weight and seatbelt
tension sensors that detect the presence of an occupant and
deploy or inhibit the passenger airbag accordingly.
The side impact protection system has a combination of
seat-mounted thorax airbags for the front seat occupants and
side curtain airbags for all rows.
The use of lightweight materials including aluminum,
magnesium and Boron steel has given LR3 great strength but
maintains a GVW of 7,121 lbs. Complex door seals are fitted
to improve refinement by controlling wind noise and dust
ingress.
Unique Land Rover design cues include its bold, geometric
vertical and horizontal elements; its stepped roof (to boost
headroom); its asymmetric rear tailgate (to reduce load
height when the lower part of the tailgate is closed, and
reduce ‘reach in’ distance when opened); the use of an air
intake on only one side of the body (it’s all that was
needed); and its large glazed areas.
This vehicle was designed from the inside out so a great
deal of attention was given to passenger comfort and
ergonomics. Front row, bucket seats are fully electrically
adjustable and are trimmed with leather upholstery. The
second row bench seats three and is set higher in Land
Rover’s "stadium seating" configuration. The optional front
facing third row of seats is set higher so all passengers
can see forward as well as upward though the Alpine windows
in the rear roof section. The entire cabin has a light and
airy feeling.
When rear seats are folded they can be pushed down to make a
flat floor more than six feet long and level from the new
drop down rear tailgate to the back of the front seats.
The cabin environment must be able to cope with a broad
range of operating conditions, from the deserts of Dubai to
the frozen tundra of Sweden. Automatic temperature control
air conditioning is standard with separate controls for the
left and right front seats. An optional rear heating and air
conditioning unit is available for vehicles with third row
seating.
A 300-watt harman/kardon® AM/FM-stereo audio
system with six-disc in-dash CD changer and nine speakers is
standard in the SE. A 550-watt harman/kardon®
LOGIC7™ digital surround-sound AM/FM-stereo audio system
with six-disc in-dash CD changer and 14 speakers is standard
in the HSE.
A new state-of-the-art, touch-screen DVD-based navigation
system is now available with both 2D and 3D map displays.
Because of the continually increasing number of electrical
requirements in a modern vehicle, and the need to carefully
interface a number of electronic control units and
processors, Land Rover engineers divided the electrical
system into four main elements that are grouped according to
the speed of transmission required. The system that links
the in-car entertainment and navigation systems uses fiber
optic cabling and is called the MOST® (Media
Orientated System Transport) network.
The LR3 also features adaptive headlights that swivel with
the direction of travel to illuminate the road ahead. Park
distance warning sensors for the rear of the vehicle are
standard on HSE. Power assisted rack and pinion steering has
a smaller turning radius than previous Land Rovers.
Throughout the development process for LR3, designers and
manufacturing engineers worked with the accessory engineers
to create a well-integrated and production-grade range of
accessories that fits well with the main design concepts.
Not only does the accessory program include conventional
items such as floor mats and mud flaps, but unique products
that exploit the vehicle’s design features and fit the
lifestyle of future owners.
One such item is a day tent that encloses the rear hatch.
There’s also a sliding load space floor, dog guard, cargo
divider, woodgrain interior enhancements and body protection
items.
Pricing for the Land Rover LR3 will begin at $44,995 for the
SE and $49,995 for the HSE, when it goes on sale this fall.
Pricing includes a $665 destination and delivery charge.
LR3 will be covered by a 4-year, 50,000 mile warranty, 6-year, unlimited
mileage corrosion warranty and Land Rover’s 24 Hour Road
Recovery plan.
