                 The
Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve (MGIB – SR, or chapter 1606 of title
10, U. S. Code) is an educational assistance program
enacted by Congress to attract high quality men and women into
the reserve branch of the Armed Forces. This program is for
members of the Selected Reserve of the Army, Navy, Air Force,
Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, and the Army and Air National
                Guard.

                Important: The reserve components decide
who’s eligible for the program. We at VA (Department of
Veterans Affairs) make the payments for the program and publish
this pamphlet. VA doesn’t make decisions about your
eligibility, and VA can’t pay benefits without eligibility
information from your reserve or Guard component.

The MGIB – SR assists eligible persons to
continue their education after high school. The benefits provide
education and training opportunities to eligible persons.
MGIB – SR is the first such program that
doesn’t require service in the active Armed Forces in order to
                qualify.
We hope this pamphlet is helpful. It provides a
general description of the education benefits. We include
information on how you receive payments under the program, and
suggestions on where to go for help or more information.

Caution: Don’t rely on this pamphlet to
determine if you’re eligible for education benefits. To
receive a formal decision from VA, you must file a claim for
benefits. See How Do You Apply

                Student
                Montgomery GI Bill
                The
reserve component of the MGIB allows you to serve in the
military branch of your choice on a part-time basis (usually two
weeks a year and one weekend per month for six years). During
that time, you can earn up to $9,180.00 in total benefits.
Unlike Active Duty, the Reserve does not require you to
contribute any money to your benefits. You become eligible for
up to $255 a month for up to 36 months after you complete basic
and technical training and you can attend class full-time while
                you serve.
                The
Army and Air National Guard requires the same commitment of time
(six years) as the Reserve and provides the same amount of
college money (up to $9,180) but may also entitle you to
additional state money for college. You may even be eligible for
up to full tuition some state schools!
