Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Lists Accomplishments
"Our enemies are not
idle, and neither are we," said Homeland Security Deputy
Secretary James Loy today, echoing the words of President Bush.
Although the president used those words to
challenge terrorists, they might also describe the Department of
Homeland Security, which has worked to achieve better security in
the aftermath of 9/11 tragedy and introduced several
new security initiatives.
Officials Report on Troop Rotation, Problems Identifying
Terrorists
The rotation
of troops into and out of Iraq is in full swing, DoD officials
said today. More than 40,000 troops
scheduled to deploy to Iraq have moved into theater, and 35,000 of
those set to come home already have departed, said Army Brig. Gen.
David Rodriguez, a Joint Staff spokesman.

Homeland Security: One Year Later
The Department of Homeland Security will
turn 1 year old March 1, but the past year has not been without
challenges, one official said today. Janet
Hale, homeland security undersecretary for management, told
members of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics
Association that the past year has been extraordinary and that
standing up the department has been one of the "largest
management challenges the federal government has ever
seen."
Rumsfeld Meets Top Leaders, Troops, Iraqis in Baghdad Visit
The secretary had high
praise for the Iraqi citizens who continue to join the
country's fledgling security forces, using the police academy
cadets he'd just seen as an example.

Polling Data Shows Majority of Iraqis Want U.S.
To Stay
Even after the June 30
handover of authority in Iraq, the majority of Iraqis would prefer
some form of U.S. security force in their country, coalition
authorities said today.
Dan Senor, senior spokesman for the
Coalition Provisional Authority, told reporters during a briefing
in Baghdad that polling data indicates the majority of Iraqis
"don't want the U.S. to go."

Chu Testifies on Alleged Overseas Sexual Assaults
The
Defense Department's senior personnel official today assured
Senate Armed Services Committee members that the military
would get to the bottom of allegations that scores of female
service members were sexually assaulted during overseas
deployments.
"Sexual
assault is a crime," David S.C. Chu, the
undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness,
declared in his opening remarks to members of the SASC's
personnel subcommittee.
